Gym Improvement Project

Hey everybody,

I've been working very hard on this project and I just want to thank everyone who has contributed their ideas, suggestions or offered their support. In total over 50% of the student body signed the Gym Improvement petition, and we got alot of feedback through the Survey.

Now, I will be meeting with President Sugihara this Wednesday (February 7th, 2007). What I need is for students to start posting their comments or opinions about the Gym publicly here on the Blog so that we can reach a common consensus on how to best spend funds and go about improving things. Don't worry, your comments on this thing are not monitored by the Administration, so go nuts!

Let's get vocal about this, it's not going to fix itself!!!

The billard table in SD2 is now in very terrible conditions. I think it should be rehabilitated.

Thanks.

OK great, I've been hearing alot about the Pool Table, let's put it on the list of things to fix...

As for the equipment for the gym, I think we really need the following:

-Barbells and proper free-weights
-Racks to store weights on so they aren't cluttered all over the floor
-Rubber mats to make the floor safer for weight training
-Lastly, I think a punching bag or Muay Thai heavy bag would be pretty cool...

Anything else people?!

I don't just want to see the people that spit in the gym, often.

I think this is a great idea to get people taking about what are the current issues in IUJ along with constructive ideas, not just complaining.

For now I would like to express my concern on the Gym, the equipment needs to be replaced the actually represent a big danger to all users since it could brake while being used. I am aware that budget is quite tight but programed changes which take place little by little could improve this gateway from our usual routine.

Thank you.

At one point we did have a punching bag in the 2nd floor. It was an OK bag but the stand they had it on was falling apart. I guess someone finally shook it apart and they took it down.

I think a stationary bike would be a good contribution.

I'll just second what others have said really.

There's not much room for adding equipment if there also needs to be area enough for the aerobics/martial arts groups.

The current facilities are a disgrace to IUJ’s reputation as an international university. A gym is a standard requirement for any university. A well equipped gym increases a University's appeal, atmosphere of the campus, overall health and livelihood of the students as well as its ranking among other universities. Not only do IUJ's current facilities not contribute to the previously listed factors, they actually deteriorate the image, possibly deterring prospective students from choosing IUJ, and exacerbate the risk of injury. The two main risks of injury come from children playing near people working out with free weights and around workout machines, and students working out with faulty or broken equipment. Children should be prohibited from playing in the weight room. It is dangerous and I know of no weight room in the world that allows children to enter. The current equipment needs to be repaired or replaced and new safe equipment such as matting, benchpresses, dumbbells and a squat cage should be added as soon as possible. In the future I would also like to see other aerobic machines added such as additional treadmills.

Students spend most of their time in the gym, especially in the winter because of the heavy snow. The equipment is very important for our life. Actually the situation now is unsatisfactory. There is a shortage of free weights. Most of the existing weight equipment and machines are very old. They are also very dangerous for us. Last year IUJ bought a new running machine for us, so we are looking forward to more improvements. Just from a onetime investment, we can use it many years, and lots of students will benefit from it. It is definitely worth it.
